6 Steps to Starting Your Massage Business

Jun 26, 2014 | by AIF

Starting your own business is an exciting prospect, especially when it’s doing something that you are passionate about. If you’re not quite sure where to start, some tips from Get inForm should point you in the right direction.

1. Qualifications

Integral to any business are the qualifications to back up your services. Massage courses in Australia range from accelerated weekend seminars to 12-month tertiary programs. The Australian Institute of Fitness offers a Diploma of Remedial Massage and Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice, both of which are nationally recognised qualifications.

2. Join a Massage Association

These organisations have a range of benefits for members, and sometimes have minimum education requirements. They will provide you with access to health fund rebates, directory listings and support services, among other advantages.

3. Register a Trading Name and an ABN

Take your time and decide what you want your business name to be, and more importantly what you want it to reflect. Once you have decided, you can register for an Australian Business Number.

4. Register with Private Health Funds

Many of your clients will want to make a claim for their massages on their health insurance and receive a rebate. If you have a Diploma of massage you can register with these health funds and obtain a provider number, which they can use to identify you.

5. The Technical Stuff

Take the time to make sure your website, social media accounts and referral marketing strategies are on point. If you struggle with this side of things, think about investing in some business software to help you manage your clients and website.

6. Acquire Business Equipment

It’s an easy thing to trip up on how expensive equipment is. So set a budget and start shopping around – new or used.
