Frequently Asked Questions

See below for the most commonly asked questions concerning Trainer Experience.

About supervision

WHO CAN BE A SUPERVISOR?

A supervisor can be an owner, licensee, franchisee or employee of a reputable fitness training business. Supervisors should hold fitness qualifications, or have equivalent higher qualifications. Examples of supervisors include: Studio/Gym Owners; Health Club/Gym Fitness Managers; Personal Trainer Coordinators; Personal Trainers employed by a fitness business; Personal Trainers who have their own business.

HOW DO STUDENTS FIND SUPERVISORS?

  • Attend a FIRE Night where potential supervisors will be looking for Personal Trainers.
  • Make a list of fitness businesses close to where you live, work or study. Call them or visit to arrange a time to chat to the person in charge of taking Personal Trainers for experience hours.
  • When visiting businesses, point them to visit this page  for their reference. Even present them with your resume and copy of your insurance documents.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A SUPERVISOR?

Their role will be to supervise the student and guide you as you practice your personal training skills. The supervisor is not required to deliver any training to you, or expected to assess your performance in any way other than providing general feedback. The supervisor oversees 30 practice hours and signs off your log book to confirm the number of hours completed.

CAN A STUDENT HAVE MORE THAN ONE SUPERVISOR?

Yes you can – you can have one, two or more supervisors. You may wish to complete some practice hours indoors in a studio or gym, and some hours outdoors training clients with a different supervisor. Each supervisor will be required to sign off on only the hours they supervise.

CAN A STUDENT COMPLETE EXPERIENCE AT A CLUB WHERE THEY'RE A MEMBER?

Yes, you can, provided the club is able to assist in supervision.

CAN A STUDENT RECEIVE PAYMENT FROM A CLUB OR A CLIENT FOR COMPLETING TRAINER EXPERIENCE HOURS?

Whilst logging Trainer Experience hours, students are considered provisionally certified by the Institute; you are not qualified as a Personal Trainer, and as such must not be paid for any practice hours, either by a supervisor, employee or client.

COULD STUDENTS BE EMPLOYED FROM TRAINER EXPERIENCE HOURS?

Yes, the fitness business may seek to employ you if you impress them whilst completing practice hours. It should be remembered that such Personal Trainers would still require attainment and issuance of their nationally recognised qualifications from the Institute prior to being able to gaining industry registration as a Personal Trainer.

About the practice hours

HOW MANY HOURS DO STUDENTS NEED TO DO?

Each student must complete a minimum of 30 hours of supervised experience and practice.

WHAT SHOULD THE 30 HOURS INVOLVE?

  • You must complete 2 hours’ facility cleaning and maintenance

  • You must complete 2 hours’ reception duties

  • You must complete 2 hours shadowing a PT

  • You must participate in 1 group exercise class

  • You must shadow a membership consultant for 1 hour or 1 consultation

  • You must spend 1 hour on the gym floor engaging with members

  • You may spend 10 hours training your own clients

  • You may make up the rest of the hours performing any of the tasks listed above, or any other task as directed by your supervisor

HOW DOES A STUDENT RECORD THEIR TRAINER EXPERIENCE HOURS?

You will record your Trainer Experience in your Master Trainer Log Book, which your supervisor/s must sign off on and date as verification.

WHEN CAN A STUDENT START LOGGING HOURS?

You can commence logging Trainer Experience hours once your Master Trainer Log Book has been signed off as 'Provisionally Certified'. This happens once you complete the requirements of Kick Start, Exercise Professional, First Aid, and Personal Trainer up to the Master Challenge (session PT 44).

WHAT IF A STUDENT COMPLETES HOURS BEFORE THE INSTITUTE PROVISIONALLY CERTIFIES YOU?

A student can start gaining industry experience before the Institute provisionally certifies you, but such hours cannot be logged as Trainer Experience hours in the Master Trainer Log Book. Only those hours completed after the Institute officially awards Provisional Certification will count towards Trainer Experience hours.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES A STUDENT HAVE TO COMPLETE THEIR HOURS?

You have between four and six weeks, depending on your mode of study in which to gain industry practice hours. You will be required to attend a Wrap Day session, either on campus or via a compulsory virtual classroom. At this time, you will have your practice hours completed, and ready to be signed off by your supervisors.

WHAT IF A STUDENT DOES NOT COMPLETE THEIR HOURS BY THE WRAP?

The four- to six-week Trainer Experience period works out to be an average of 7.25 hours per week, which is considered realistic. If a student is unable to achieve this, you can make a written request to the Training Team Captain for an extension to enable you to complete Trainer Experience outside of this period, subject to availability.

Student responsibilities

WHAT SHOULD THE STUDENT WEAR FOR TRAINER EXPERIENCE?

All students are required to adhere to the Uniform Policy of the Institute, unless directed otherwise by the supervisor. Presentation during Trainer Experience is a requirement for Master Trainer certification.

IS A STUDENT COVERED BY INSURANCE WHEN DOING TRAINER EXPERIENCE?

Yes, you are covered by the Institute's insurances (both Public Liability and Professional Indemnity) whilst studying, which you should have activated at the start of your course. This cover remains in place until you complete your Master Trainer program.

CAN A STUDENT BRING ITS OWN CLIENTS TO TRAIN DURING TRAINER EXPERIENCE?

Some fitness businesses may allow you to 'BYO' clients for practice hours, under supervision, but the client may be required to be a member of the club first or be asked to pay a casual visit fee and sign a waiver. You may also train your own personal clients for 10 hours. Conduct these sessions in a suitable location, and be sure to complete all pre-screening documentation for these clients. This information will be required in the instance of an insurance claim.
