The Fitness Zone
The human body is a weird and wonderful thing as it has many functions and features which we occur unknowingly. Apart from the muscles, bones and different body systems, there may be a few things about the human body that you did not know, and Australian Institute of Fitness Master Coach, Rob Hadley is here to expose TEN interesting facts that will be sure to have you in awe;
#1 The human body sheds about 600,000 particles of skin every hour
You may not notice or think too much about it as you are not peeling or the skin is not flaky, however, the skin is constantly renewing itself and shedding dead cells.
#2 There is around 100,000km of blood vessels in the body
This is a lot, the length of all of the blood vessels laid out could easily wrap around the world.. WOW!
#3 The brain itself can’t feel pain
While the brain may be the pain centre, sending out the signals when you cut or burn yourself, however the brain itself does not have any pain receptors on it and feel pain. Don’t worry your head will still “hurt” as the brain is surrounded by tissues, nerves and blood vessels that will be receptive to pain.
#4 Every day the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair
Unless someone is already bald, the average person will shed 60-100 strands of hair each day. It will actually vary according to season, pregnancy, illness, diet and age.
#5 Acid in the stomach is strong enough to dissolve razor blades
While you wouldn’t go about testing this, the acids in the stomach that assist with digestion (hydrochloric acid) can be strong enough to eat through various types of metal.
#6 After eating too much, hearing is diminished
If you need to listen carefully you may want to think about overeating. It can be noted that when you eat too much, your ability to hear clearly and according to volume is slightly reduced.
#7 Your nose can remember 50,000 different scents
Humans can detect and identify a wide variety of scents. Many of them are tied strongly to recall and memory. For most people it can be up to 50,000 different types.
#8 It takes 17 muscles to smile but 43 muscles to frown
Why do you think it people say it’s better to smile, rather than frown? Because it’s easier and requires less effort. On average it takes 17 muscles to smile, whilst it takes 43 to frown. So remember to turn the frown upside down!
#9 The tooth can’t repair itself
The outer layer of the tooth is made of enamel which is not living tissue. Since it is not living, it can’t repair itself, therefore any significant damage needs to be worked on by the dentist.
#10 The body has enough iron in it to produce a nail around 7.5cm
There are significant levels of iron in the body (particularly the blood), if you were to take out all of the iron in the human body you would have enough to make a small nail.
So there you have it, the body is a wonderful thing and continues to surprise and amaze us every day with what it does.
