How A Fitness Education Helped Biggest Loser Winner Sam Rouen Maintain His Transformation

In 2008, Sam Rouen was crowned The Biggest Loser after shedding 71 kilograms on national television. Since then he has not only managed to maintain his amazing weight-loss, but also completed his Master Trainer studies to become a qualified Personal Trainer, taken up marathons, found love, become a Firefighter and even appeared in the 2015-16 NSW Firefighters Calendar.  

Was it all worth it? Absolutely.

“If I could tell my past self anything; I would say that it would be a lot of hard work, sacrifice and commitment. But not to worry because it is definitely worth it.”

Sam now lives his life to the fullest and is an example of how weight-loss doesn’t just change your appearance, but will shift your outlook and quality of life.  

While it was almost 7 years ago, Sam remembers exactly what it is like in the TBL house. He says right now, the contestants would be struggling, home-sick and and seriously sore.

“If asked for advice, I would let them know that it's all about consistency and to keep pushing through because every day gets them closer to their result.”

In 2011, Sam graduated as a Master Trainer with the Australian Institute of Fitness, and reflecting on his journey, says knowledge and education were vital part of his success particularly once he got out of the house. Sam says understanding the science behind weight-loss was like a secret weapon.

“Rather than just doing things that you think or are told are right, you can really start to figured out and customise what works for you.”

While he doesn’t work as a Personal Trainer, Sam has found his studies complemented his work as a Firefighter and even mean he can do some sneaky training sessions with his brother!

“I don't work as a PT, but I always knew the Master Trainer course would complement my lifestyle and help me maintain a better level of health and fitness for my job. I found that I had a much greater depth of knowledge and a more holistic idea of training and health.”

Sam now integrates multiple resistance and cardio sessions into his week, and enjoys a balanced and nutritious diet that will always include the occasional row of dark chocolate at the Fire Station.
