Instant Heart Rate
April 17, 2015 | by Jarryd Sullivan

Instant Heart Rate is a smart phone app by Azumio, available on both Apple and Android devices. The Instant Heart Rate app won “Best Health & Fitness app on Mobile” at the Premier Awards in 2011, judged by industry experts from Google Play.

Measure Your Heart Rate

The main features of the app are to measure heart rate and store the results of each measurement. Each time you take a measurement you can assign an activity to it using pre-existing tags, or you can create your own tag if none are suitable.

Overall I think the app is an important tool, as monitoring heart rate over a long period of time and during different lifestyle situations can be very effective in assessing general health and wellbeing.

Set Your Training Zone

Instant Heart Rate also gives the user the ability to set heart rate zones using the Karvonen method. This is beneficial to the user, as it enables them to identify and utilise training zones to target and achieve different goals. Once the zones are set, Instant Heart Rate automatically indicates what zone the individual is currently in. This empowers the user to get the most out of their training with limited education on physiology and specific training principles.

App Technology

The way the app works is by using a technology developed by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute called Photoplethysmographyilluminating the skin with the light from the device’s flash (LED) and then measuring the amount of light either transmitted or reflected back to the lens on the device’s camera.

There has been some question over the accuracy of the device, as there are a large number of variables that can influence the result, including quality of the LED flash, camera lens quality, age of the device used and movement of the finger while the pulse is being detected.

Overall Rating

Instant Heart Rate is an extremely useful tool for exercise enthusiasts or those interested in their health. I do question the accuracy of the app, but for non-clinical use this is perfectly fine.

I would like to see the interface of the app improved to make it more user-friendly, as at times it can seem a little busy on the screen, making it hard to navigate. As a whole, the Instant Heart rate app is a very impressive tool to have in your pocket on a daily basis if you want to get more serious in regards to your health and wellbeing. I give this app a score of 3/5.
