Kayla Itsines: Pushing Instagram to the Limits
March 21, 2015

Kayla Itsines is an Adelaide-bred fitness guru who has recently been named by TIME as one of the most influential people on the Internet. The 24 year old had humble beginnings on Instagram, which when she first started using the account didn’t even realise that other people could see her posts. Fast forward to today and Kayla now has over 4.7 million followers on Instagram, over 5 million “likes” on Facebook and people watching her Youtube videos and reading her tweets on Twitter daily.

Being interested in basketball her whole life, Kayla has always been physical and interested in sports. Having been diagnosed with endometriosis, she was told that she may not have children. After searching online for alternatives, she read that if she was to stay fit and healthy, this could change in the future. Kayla started her fitness journey by starting a personal training course at the Australian Institute of Fitness, which led to her role at a “women’s only” fitness centre. With so many women complaining about the same areas on their bodies that they wish they could improve, Kayla took to creating a program that would help women all over the world. By creating her own program, the Bikini Body Guides (or #BBG as it has now become a popular hashtag on social media), many women started seeing great results within 12 weeks of training which really only needed the participation in her 28 minute workout.

Kayla has now started to conduct boot camp sessions all over the world, including locations such as Sydney, Berlin and Amsterdam. With her popularity on social media, she’s also gained the attention of celebrities and athletes. Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel and Australian swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Rice are just two of some popular followers of her accounts that look to her for inspiration. Her social media accounts are inspiring and will often feature the before and after photos of people who have taken up her program to help improve their body and fitness levels. One of the reasons so many people enjoy her program is the fact that expensive gym equipment isn’t needed. Her program looks to help women get the most out of a bit of space in the home (or anywhere you wish to workout) and some basic equipment that won’t break the bank.

Not only is her fitness model something to be proud of, but her business side is something to be admired. After almost losing control of how popular she was getting on social media, with help from her boyfriend, she managed to start getting ahead with the huge amount of popularity headed her way. Her business of helping others has hugely successful due to her various types of uploads depending on the sites she shares them to. Followers can find new material on Youtube compared to her Facebook page and Instagram account. To top it off, she’s very motivational. Kayla offers motivation on her accounts for her followers to believe in themselves. She often shares personal images of her food, the animals in her life and stories from clients. She’s down to earth and often helps other business and entrepreneurs to be successful in their own field.
