It's well documented that 'couples that workout together, stay together', but as a Personal Trainer what do you need to consider when training a couple? Jason Fleming, Lead Coach at the Australian Institute of Fitness ACT campus explains.
Benefits for the Couple
Many couples already spend considerable time apart because of career demands and other responsibilities. Having a scheduled workout appointment with a Personal Trainer is a way to guarantee that they'll have at least a bit of bonding time each week away from work, home, and/or the kids.
Getting encouragement and praise from each other is also one of the best motivators. It'll help both clients remain consistent and take care of one another during the sessions and outside scheduled session time.
In addition, by encouraging couple training session, there is a higher chance of your clients reaching their goals and they are more likely to make healthy decision together at home if BOTH are on board. It can be a BIG challenge for couples when just one is looking after their health and the other isn’t.
Things to Watch Out For
When training a couple you must be aware of the way they communicate with each other, along with the way you communicate with each of them.
Clients may take their personal training time as an opportunity to discuss personal matters from home and lose their concentration you need to get them back on track quickly and focused on the session.
There are certain variables that you as a Personal Trainer must be aware of when programming for training a couple. Strength and increased lean muscle mass are the most common goals for clients, so we must ensure that the resistance, sets and reps, along with the rest in between exercises is programmed correctly in order to help both clients achieve their goals. Kettlebells, dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, or what ever other resistant equipment you have should be laid out to cater for both of your clients' strengths.
With many couples, one partner tends to favour cardio (typically women) while the other tends to favour strength training (typically men). When you're training them together you can balance the workout program to include a mixture of both in all sessions to guarantee both clients enjoy every workout. I have found that a little competition is great for training partners it's amazing how motivated they get if they know the prize is not to have to cook dinner!
The main difference between one-on one training/group personal training and training a couple is the motivation that they provide each other getting to and during the workout, which benefits everyone involved, so be sure to market to couples and inform your current clients of the benefits of working out with their partner.
