Tips To Improve Your Sleep

Jun 02, 2021  |  Published by Slice

Did you know, according to the National Sleep Foundation:

  • Sleep is just as important as healthy eating and exercise.
  • Sleep deprivation can have the same effects as alcohol on the body.
  • People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to have bigger appetites because their Leptin levels (Leptin is an appetite-regulating hormone) fall, promoting appetite increase.
  • In general, most healthy adults need 7-9 hours of sleep.

How to get a better night’s sleep:

  • The National Sleep Foundation recommends that you should stop using electronic devices, like phone- at least 30 minutes before bed.
  • This is because the blue light from your phone interrupts your bodies internal clock and rhythm.
  • This blue light stimulates your brain and may keep you awake, resulting in a restless sleep.
  • Limit caffeine consumption before bed.
  • Relax your mind in the evening- perhaps read a book to wind down before bed.
  • Exercising throughout the day will assist in a better night’s sleep. However, try not to exercise just before bed, as adrenaline will be heightened in your body.

Last Thursday night was the opening night of the “Yaama Ngunna Bakka”- meaning “Welcome to our Rivers” Group Exhibition, held at Gallery 11:11- which will continue until June 6th. Many respected Artist’s have generously donated their time and artwork to help raise funds for and awareness of the devastation that has occurred in the Murray-Darling Basin. This diverse exhibition was organised by the Gallery’s owner-Melony Kara Smirniotis to help support Uncle Bruce Shillingsworth, a Muruwari and Budjiti man who is a “Water for the Rivers” activist and talented Artist himself. The exhibition is intended to connect both Artists and audience through art and story telling and in the spirit of reconciliation- brings together a diverse group of artists and mediums- all working as one for a worthy cause. For further information on the Exhibition go to www.gallery1111.net

Local Artist and Business Woman Melony Kara Smirniotis owns and manages Gallery 11:11- which is situated in the suburb of North Epping.
