In a recent catch-up with long-time fitness industry veteran and AIF graduate Owen, we discussed his path into the fitness industry and the trailblazer pace he has set for others to follow. Owen is a dynamic figure whose journey from aspiring soccer player to fitness entrepreneur has captivated the fitness world. With a passion for health and wellness deeply rooted in his upbringing, Owen’s path to success is marked by resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Owen’s initial dream was to be a professional soccer player, causing him to jet off to Italy at 18 years of age with a semi-pro contract in hand. After the dream shattered and he realised the pro-leagues were just out of reach, Owen returned to Australia not knowing his next steps. This had been his dream since he was eight years old so it hit hard and took some time to reconcile this fact.
His introduction to the fitness industry is thanks to his father who pushed him to get out of the house and into the gym…and the rest is almost history!
By finding a love of the gym and being offered a job, Owen was able to experience many roles that operate with a fitness establishment. From reception work, to sales then onto Personal Training, Owen’s hands-on experience provided him with invaluable insights into the operational aspects of fitness facilities. However, it was this latter transition into personal training that ignited his entrepreneurial spirit, leading him to co-found CrankIt Fitness—an endeavour dedicated to innovation and education within the fitness landscape.
Throughout his journey, Owen has not only played a pivotal role in product design but has also spearheaded initiatives aimed at advancing fitness education and training methodologies. His dedication to leveraging technology and media production to enhance fitness solutions has positioned him as a trailblazer in the industry, inspiring others to pursue their passions and embrace the transformative power of fitness.
As the fitness industry continues to evolve, so too do the opportunities for career advancement and specialisation. Gone are the days of a one-size-fits-all approach to fitness careers, as professionals like Owen have embraced the diverse array of roles and emerging opportunities within the field.
In contrast to traditional roles, which often revolved around personal training or gym instruction, today’s fitness landscape offers a plethora of avenues for growth and development. From gym management to studio ownership and even fitness entrepreneurship, individuals like Owen have leveraged their skills and expertise to carve out unique niches and make a lasting impact.
Central to this diversification is the recognition of the importance of mentorship and ongoing skill development. While initial certification provides a foundation, it is through continued learning and guidance from seasoned professionals that aspiring fitness professionals can truly excel. Owen’s journey serves as a testament to this, as he not only honed his craft as a personal trainer but also sought out opportunities to expand his skill set and knowledge base.
From gym operations to overseeing product design and education initiatives at CrankIt Fitness, Owen’s multifaceted experience has equipped him with a diverse skill set and a keen understanding of the intricacies of the fitness industry. By embracing new challenges and staying abreast of emerging trends, Owen has positioned himself as a versatile leader capable of navigating the ever-changing landscape of modern fitness.
