Want a challenging workout with a difference? Tanna Wells, Course Crusader at Australian Institute of Fitness SA/NT takes a look at the free version of Deck of Cards WOD (Workout of the Day).
The Deck of Cards WOD app is unsurprisingly based on a deck of cards. It uses the face value of each card to decipher the exercise you need to complete and the repetitions. And yes, as there are 52 cards in a deck; the workout isn’t complete until you have performed every card.
How Does It Work?
All of the exercises are separated into their decks and each assigned an exercise with the face value determining how many repetitions to complete each time the suit/exercise comes up. You can adjust the default workout to suit your level of fitness, allowing you to make it as challenging as you like!
Once you have selected your exercises and assigned them to a suit or Joker, you hit start and then the cards start popping up at random perform. With a new card every tap of the screen, you never know what’s coming, which is awesome!
Tip to Get the Most out of the App
Deck of Card WOD can create a very hard work out with the high amount of reps and sets you have to repeat, so I recommend body weight exercises or those where you have a greater muscle endurance.
It is Worth a Download?
The app is a great concept for both self-motivated people that like a challenge and those that need a bit of a virtual Personal Trainer to give them a push.
The Deck of Cards WOD app does have its cons, in that you cannot save your workout to be able to then complete the same workout each time or be able to share the workout on social media to challenge a friend, where if you were to purchase the $0.99 version you could if you wanted too.
Other than being able to send the workout to a friend I didn’t find there was too much difference between the free app and the paid versions.
I highly recommend the free version if you’re just wanting to compete against yourself and the time. The app inspires a great new work out that pushes you, just what it sets out to do.
