Becoming A Gym Instructor

Jun 26, 2014 | by AIF

Becoming a Gym Instructor opens up the door to a career in fitness and becoming a fitness professions. As a gym instructor a lot of the time you are the first person new members meet and you are responsible for their first gym experience.

If it wasn’t for gym instructors, a lot of us would not have the foundation and the confidence to walk into any gym and know what we are doing.

Imagine that a member of your family or a good friend joined a gym for the very first time and think of the qualities or characteristics you would expect in the gym Instructors. A gym instructor should be welcoming and understanding. Joining a gym can be a daunting experience for a first timer, and a lot of new members can be self conscious and really stepping out of their comfort zones so it is important for a gym instructor to be aware of the members feelings and insecurities.

One of the main responsibilities of a gym instructor is to prescribe gym programs to new members and to induct new members so they are across how to use the equipment confidently to help achieve their fitness goals.

There will be some members who join the gym that choose not to have an introduction session, even though it may be in their best interest to do so. As a gym instructor you have the responsibility to help correct technique and give feedback to members who are on the gym floor. Remember you are the expert!

Another task that you will be responsible for on the gym floor is the fun job of keeping the gym tidy, clean and fresh. It would be great if everyone wiped down their machines after they used them and put their weights away but unfortunately we all know this is not the case.

Being a gym floor instructor not only kick starts a new member’s fitness journey, but it also aids your personal training business by having the opportunity to share your wealth of knowledge to members you will have a higher chance in building your PT client base than if you did not have this opportunity to connect with new members. DO NOT shy away from gym floor hours when your manager asks you to fill in, take it as an opportunity to build your business!

Another responsibility you may have as a gym floor instructor, is the gym floor small group training that is advertised on the clubs timetable. Again these classes are a great opportunity to get in front of potential PT clients and a way you can show your technical and motivational skills. Most gyms provide training for the small group classes which is excellent professional development and you can take the skills you learn here to build your own bootcamp or even use certain aspects in one on one sessions!

If you are completing your Master Trainer Program you can get your career as a fitness professional started as soon as you complete your fitness instructor course. The earlier you start working in the industry the sooner you can start to apply what you have learnt on campus in real life and start helping your clients and members reach their goals!
