10 Reasons Why You're Not Seeing Improvement in Your Clients

Through a combination of continued learning, research, and real life experiences Jay Divitini, Australian Institute of Fitness WA Coach, gives 10 reasons why you as a Personal Trainer may not be seeing results in your clients.

1.Goals

How do you know where you're going if you don't have a destination?

By setting goals with your clients you can measure their progress and, more importantly, hold them accountable using their goals. I use the SMART' principal with goal setting: Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Time frame.

2.Lack of Nutrition Knowledge

It's 80% Nutrition, 20% Training.

Clients often neglect or don't understand how important nutrition is, but nutrition and exercise work hand in hand for getting results. We highly recommend Smartshape's Nutrition for Fat Loss course to build your confidence in giving nutrition advice to clients seeking to lose weight.

3.Sleep

We overeat if we don't get enough sleep.

It's a little complicated, but in simple terms the later you stay up, the more your brain will force you to seek energy for storage by eating sugar. The recommended amount of sleep is 7-9 hours a night.

4.Water

The average body is 75% water.

Water is the basis of all life and that includes your body. Your muscles that move your body are 75% water; your blood that transports nutrients is 82% water; your lungs that provide your oxygen are 90% water; your brain that is the control centre of your body is 76% water; even your bones are 25% water. Bottom line drink more water!

5.Not Moving Enough

People aren't moving as much as they use to.

Lifestyle, occupation, technology, and transport are just a few factors why people aren't moving as much as they use to. 30 minutes of exercise is what we should be aiming for each day. It sounds quite simple, but you would be surprised how many people don't do it.

6.Support Network

The more support your clients have, the better.

Being surrounded by positive, supportive, and caring people is vital. Family members, spouses and work colleagues will pay huge role in your clients' success. People who are negative and unsupportive will slow your clients' down and hinder their progress.

7.Overtraining

The more they train, the more results they get, right?

Without adequate rest and recovery we can be susceptible to injury and a decrease in performance. More is better' or no pain, no gain' is a thing of the past and we must remember the golden goal of personal training: never injure your client'.

8.Information in Circulation

Do this, do that, this works, this doesn't work.

Its difficult these days to watch a television show, listen to the radio, or see a billboard that is promoting different information on what is good and what is bad for you. People can be easily influenced so it is important to educate your clients on scientific and proven methods to reach their goals.

9.Magic Pills/Fads/Crazes

There is no magic shortcut!

If there was a magic pill or potion where we could see results in such a short time, why is obesity on the increase? Advise your clients to save their money on quick fixes and follow the simple, yet highly effective principle move more, eat smarter'.

10.Consistency

Today they are disciplined, but what about tomorrow?

Every client has their bad habits and limiting factors, and it's how we as Personal Trainers help these clients to succeed. Helping your clients believe that they can achieve their goals is very important, as is keeping your clients motivated, and constantly reminding them why they are doing it.

Lifestyle factors, modern society, conflicting information are just a handful of reasons why my clients and the general population are not seeing improvements. By offering support, guidance and a genuine want to help your clients as well as taking into account these reasons listed, you should see improved results in your clients.
